Group Purchasing Case Study
Waste Management – Cannock Sites
During the first and second quarters of 2008 the Cannock sites experienced a series of significant service problems from their incumbent supplier of waste management services.
As a consequence Group Purchasing sought a new supplier to provide the waste management services for both Aliaxis businesses at the Cannock sites and a purchasing strategy was developed with Operations & Environmental specialists from both companies.
Five specialist suppliers were invited to participate in a competitive tender which included a company presentation and site visit where all five tenderers were requested to attend; all five subsequently submitted tenders.
Biffa, a national waste management service provider who provide a similar service to Hunter Plastics at Woolwich were selected as the preferred supplier as they offered the most complete and cost-effective service.
Following their appointment Biffa was able to:
- Develop significant improvements to the current methods of waste collection to help reduce the Site waste sent to landfill
- Greatly improve the hazardous waste collection by advising on improved separation techniques
- Provide special containers for the collection of purge and waste big bags which are then recycled
- Provide training for the Cannock workforce to encourage waste separation at the point of collection
- Provide monthly summary of weights collected by waste stream of all waste collected from sites
As a consequence of the work undertaken with Biffa significant cost savings on waste management have resulted. Waste volumes have been reduced and changes in procedures and staff training have resulted in a changed mentality to the management of waste on site.
