Group Purchasing Case Study

Waste Management – DHM Lenham, Hunter Plastics Woolwich

Aliaxis Case StudiesWith the advent of the new dhm manufacturing facility at Lenham, Kent Group Purchasing undertook a tender during the last quarter of 2009, to select a supplier to supply waste management services across the Lenham site.

The strategy was to replace a traditional call and collect waste management process with one that involved more focus on eliminating waste, waste streaming and recycling.

Following appropriate supply market research, three specialist suppliers were invited to participate in a competitive tender exercise in order to obtain progressive waste management proposals in line with planned business developments. This involved conducting a detailed site survey and presenting findings to key personnel.

All suppliers submitted tenders and after a thorough evaluation the cross functional business project team selected Countrystyle as the preferred supplier representing the fact that this supplier demonstrated a clear understanding of business requirements coupled with the most complete and cost-effective service offering.

In line with agreed set objectives this project will realise the following benefits:

  • Direct cost savings
  • Training of all site personnel on waste streaming
  • Complete legislative compliance
  • Landfill reduction
  • Increased revenue from targeted waste recycling

As a consequence of the work undertaken with Countrystyle at the Lenham site, it was subsequently decided to extend waste management services provided to Hunter Plastics, Woolwich.

In the longer term it is planned to achieve zero waste to landfill by way of improved streaming techniques and input to ‘waste to energy’ plant.
